FAQs
What is a Heritage Inventory?
A Heritage Inventory is a list of properties, buildings, and sites that have been identified as having cultural, historical, or architectural significance to the community. It helps the City understand what is important to residents and guides how heritage resources are managed and conserved over time.
Why is the City updating the Heritage Inventory?
The City’s current Heritage Inventory was completed in 2011. Since then, Camrose has continued to grow and change. Updating the inventory ensures that the City’s record of significant sites remains current, accurate, and reflective of the community’s evolving story.
How are properties selected for the Heritage Inventory?
Professional heritage consultants, working with the City, assess properties using criteria such as historical significance, architectural style, cultural value, and community importance. Public input and historical research also play a role in identifying and evaluating sites.
How can residents get involved?
Residents/property owners are encouraged to share stories, photographs, and historical information about places that hold meaning to them. Engagement opportunities — such as an online survey and a community open house will be advertised on the City’s website and social media channels throughout the project.
Does being listed on the Heritage Inventory mean a property is protected?
No. Listing a property on the Heritage Inventory does not mean it is designated or protected under the Alberta Historical Resources Act. The inventory simply identifies sites of potential heritage value. Any formal protection or designation would only occur through a separate process involving the property owner and City Council.
When will the update be completed?
The Heritage Inventory & Survey Update is expected to be completed by late 2026. Once finalized, the updated inventory will be available to the public on the City’s website.
Who is leading the project?
The project is being led by the City of Camrose’s Planning and Development Department in partnership with the City of Camrose Heritage Advisory Committee (HAC) along with Stantec’s team of heritage consultants qualified under the Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals (CAHP).
