What is a Urban Design Framework (UDF)?

A UDF, or Urban Design Framework, is a roadmap that sets the vision, goals, and design principles for downtown. It guides how new projects and redevelopments should look and feel, ensuring downtown develops a cohesive, attractive, functional, and livable City.

Why does Camrose need a UDF?

While the City already has a Downtown Area Redevelopment Plan (DARP), the UDF builds on it by providing more detailed and practical design guidance. This helps ensure that future development fits the heritage of downtown while supporting growth, investment, and vibrancy.

Who drafts the policies in the UDF?

The City of Camrose is working with B&A, an urban planning and design consulting firm, to draft the framework for Council’s consideration. The work is informed by existing City policies, best practices, and community input.

How was the consultant chosen for this project?

A Request for Proposal (RFP) was posted on the Alberta Purchasing Connections Website in the summer of 2025, seeking professional services to support the Urban Design Framework that complements the existing DARP. The successful consultant, B&A, demonstrated their extensive experience in urban design, land use planning, public engagement, and policy development.

How can I get involved to provide input?

The City invites all Camrose residents to engage throughout the project. Keep an eye out for opportunities posted on social media and around the city. You’ll have a chance to complete an online survey and participate in person at an upcoming Open House and pop-up events.

Who will the City be consulting with to receive input?

Engagement will focus on key groups with a direct interest in downtown, including residents, business owners, landowners, and developers. Broader community members are also encouraged to participate.

What is Council’s role in the UDF?

City Council’s role is to review the draft UDF, consider public and stakeholder input, and decide whether to adopt the framework as a guiding document for downtown redevelopment.

What are the vision and guiding principles from the DARP?

The DARP envisions downtown Camrose as a welcoming, vibrant, and connected place that blends its historic character with opportunities for renewal. Its guiding principles include enhancing walkability, supporting mixed-use development, preserving heritage, strengthening the public realm, and creating a strong sense of place.
